It's monday afternoon in Cherbourg. After yesterday's desperate combat, I felt really tired. I tapped my legs. As I sat down on part of the collapsed bridge, I felt thirsty. When is the reinforcement gonna arrive? I stared down the road. Flies buzzed around me. I swatted them away. I picked up my canteen and unscrewed the top. Nope, no water. I stood up and walked toward one of the water barrel. It contained no water. I checked the other one. There was a pool of water way at the bottom. I ducked down and filled my canteen. I gulped down the water. I decided to move the sandbags further down the road. One by one, i moved the sandbags and piled them up into a small obstacle. I set down the machine-gun and the rocket-launcher. I walked back toward where my bag lay. I decided to try some rations. I took the ration heater and poured water in it. As the ration heater got hot, I placed the ration on top. The ration slowly cooked. As they were cooking, I took off my helmet and walked around the bridge toward the river. I dipped the helmet in and got a helmet full of water. I started rinsing my hair. The water felt cool as it trickled down my face. I dried my face with my jacket. The rations are fully cooked, I thought. I walked back up and took the ration out of the ration heater. I started eating, gulping water in between.
I finally finished my ration. The reinforcement still haven't arrived. I started tapping again. I stopped. I reached into my chest pocket and got out 'Gone with the Wind' novel. I started reading. The day grew darker. It made me difficult to read. I turned on my lantern and continued reading. Finally, i heard a familiar rumbling of tank tracks. The reinforcement has finally arrived. I stood and walked up. I shook the Captain's hand and explained what happened. I was finally going home.
